10 Ton Overhead Crane for a Steel Plant in the Philippines

Last year, we received a call from a customer in the Philippines asking about bridge cranes. They indicated that they were in the steel industry, producing hot-rolled steel plates, I-beams and billets for construction. Due to adjustments in production schedules, this customer plans to purchase a new 10-ton overhead crane.

Their lifting needs

The customer's production plant mainly carries out cutting, welding and stacking operations of steel plates. After on-site communication and mapping, we identified the following key requirements:

Requirements Specific parameters/requirements
Rated lifting capacity 10 Ton
Span 16 Meters
Lifting height 12 Meters
Job level A6
Control mode Remote control + cab dual mode (remote control for daily flexible operation, cab for hot area or complex lifting)
Positioning Accuracy Requires anti-sway control to avoid steel plates hitting workers or equipment

Challenges in the lifting environment

The lifting environment in a steel mill is far from ordinary workshop. Therefore, there are other factors that need to be taken into account when providing lifting solutions for steel mills to avoid safety risks to the life and safety of the equipment in the final lifting solution.

Challenge Specific description Impact on cranes
High temperature radiation Temperatures in the vicinity of steel plate cutting and welding areas can reach 50-60°C, and the presence of hot steel plates for lifting Motors, cables, control components are easy to aging; wire rope lubrication volatilization, shortening life
Dust and Iron Chips Large quantities of grinding dust, oxidized skin and iron filings in the workshop Conductive dust can contaminate electrical cabinets and cause short circuits; iron filings can get stuck in wheels or gearboxes
Continuous high load operation Average number of hours per crane operation Ordinary work class cranes are prone to structural fatigue or motor overheating
Space constraints The original 5-ton crane had a low rail height and there were pipes and ventilation ducts above the workshop New cranes must be installed under the existing plant structure without altering the main roof beams

Solutions we offer

In response to these challenges, our technical team had several video communications with the client to discuss the specifics, and ultimately produced a detailed proposal for the client to view. The customer was very satisfied with the initial proposal, but indicated minor changes, after which we finally supplied a 10 ton double girder overhead crane. Cranes in the iron and steel industry work harder, single girder overhead travelling crane in 10 tons, span 16, and long-term continuous operation under the stability and rigidity of the poor, under long-term use is prone to deflection and gnawing rails. The double girder structure is not only more stable under the same working conditions, but also provides an independent maintenance platform for the hoisting mechanism.

Core Configuration and Design

Components Standard Configuration Customized improvements for steel mills
Main beam Double girder box structure Adopting thickened steel plate and internal partition to improve fatigue resistance; overall rust removal + high temperature resistant epoxy paint
Lifting mechanism 10 ton wire rope hoist Equipped with high-temperature-resistant steel wire rope (with steel structural core); hoist motor with H-class insulation
Electrical control system Variable frequency + PLC Added wide voltage regulator module; control cabinet IP54 protection with positive pressure cooling filter fan
Security Configuration Basic Limit + Overload Added: anti-sway control module, hoist overspeed switch, motor temperature monitoring
Tracks and Slip Lines General purpose The rail is fixed by pressure plate with buffer pad; the sliding contact wire is selected to be high-temperature-resistant and dust-proof type
