A client from Yemen, who operates a chemical products business locally, primarily produces chemical additives. They reached out to us through our website, seeking solutions for explosion-proof cranes.

Customer Lifting Requirements

This lifting project involves a chemical environment project with extremely high safety standards. We requested detailed information from the client before providing a quote:

  • ➢Workshop Hazardous Area Classification Diagram
  • ➢Track support conditions of the existing plant structure
  • ➢Types and weights of main lifting items
  • ➢On-site temperature and humidity, corrosive gas conditions

The client was very cooperative and promptly provided us with the workshop floor plan and on-site photos. Based on the photos provided by the client, we observed that the interior environment of the workshop is relatively compact, with many pieces of equipment and tanks inside. The roof of the workshop features a color steel tile structure, with clearly visible steel frames, providing suitable conditions for installing tracks. The client specifically circled the area above the mixing tank with a red pen—there is a maintenance platform there, requiring the motor and mixing paddle to be hoisted up for repairs, which is also the most direct reason for their purchase of the crane.

Customer's Requirements

Challenges in the Customer's Operating Environment

Challenge 1: Compliance Requirements for Zone 2 Explosion-Proof Areas

The solvents stored and handled in the customer's workshop are classified as Class A or Class B flammable liquids. While an explosive gas atmosphere is unlikely to occur under normal operating conditions, risks remain in the event of equipment failure or leakage. Therefore, the area is classified as Zone 2 (where an explosive gas atmosphere is unlikely to occur during normal operation, and if it does, it will be short-lived).

This requires that the crane meet the following conditions:

  • ➢All electrical components (motors, control boxes, limit switches, remote control receivers) must meet the Ex nA (non-sparking type) or Ex eb (increased safety type) explosion-proof rating

  • ➢Mechanical components (hooks, wire ropes, wheels) must be made of non-sparking materials or undergo special treatment to prevent the generation of mechanical sparks during operation

  • ➢The entire machine must obtain ATEX or IECEx certification (these are internationally recognized standards for explosion-proof equipment)

Challenge 2: Corrosion of equipment caused by corrosive gases in the workshop

Volatile solvents commonly found in chemical workshops (such as benzene and ketones) are highly corrosive to standard paints and seals. The customer specifically mentioned that on previously used standard forklifts, the paint began to bubble and peel within two years, and the rubber seals hardened and cracked. The crane's electrical components and cables must also be corrosion-resistant.

Our Solutions

To address the challenges mentioned above, we have designed an Ex II 3G explosion-proof single-girder overhead crane for our client, with the following specifications:

Configuration Our Custom Design Why We Designed It This Way
Crane Models LB Series Explosion-Proof Single-Girder Bridge Crane The single-girder structure has a light dead weight, placing low demands on the building's load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for light steel structures
Rated lifting capacity 5 tons Meets current needs with a safety margin
Span 9.2 meters Fully covers the blending tank area and raw material storage area without the need for moving tracks
Lifting Height 5.5 meters 1.7 meters above the top of the tank to allow sufficient space for maintenance and lifting operations
Explosion-Proof Rating Ex II 3G (Ex nA IIB T4) Suitable for Zone 2 areas, handling Class IIB gases (such as propane, ethylene), T4 temperature class (≤135°C)
Explosion-proof certification ATEX certification + IECEx certification Complies with internationally recognized standards, ensuring smooth customs clearance and local safety inspections
Hoisting mechanism 5-ton explosion-proof electric wire rope hoist Wire rope hoists operate more smoothly than chain hoists, making them suitable for maintenance tasks requiring precise positioning
Travel Mechanism Explosion-proof motor + explosion-proof limit switch Both trolley and hoist travel mechanisms feature explosion-proof configurations

FAQs of 5 Ton Explosion-proof Single Girder Bridge Crane

1. What do Zone 1 and Zone 2 mean? How should I choose?

Zone 1: Areas where explosive gas atmospheres may occur during normal operation (e.g., near tank openings); Zone 2: Areas where explosive gas atmospheres are unlikely to occur during normal operation, and if they do, they are short-lived (e.g., the exterior of enclosed piping). Most chemical plants fall under Zone 2, but the specific classification must be determined by a professional safety assessment agency. We can provide explosion-proof configurations tailored to your specific zone classification.

2. What is the difference between explosion-proof cranes and standard cranes?

The main difference lies in the explosion-proof measures: all electrical components (motors, switches, controllers) are specially designed to prevent arcing or sparks; mechanical components (such as hooks and wheels) are made of materials like copper or beryllium copper alloys to prevent sparks from collisions; the entire unit undergoes rigorous testing to ensure it does not act as an ignition source in hazardous environments.

3. Does this 5-ton explosion-proof crane require structural reinforcement of the factory building?

Not necessarily. Our LB-type single-girder explosion-proof crane features a lightweight design, with the unit's total weight reduced by approximately 20% compared to standard cranes. In most light-gauge steel structures, no additional reinforcement is required as long as the existing steel beams can meet the track load requirements. Our engineers will assess your facility's conditions before providing a quote.
