Double Girder Overhead Crane for Steel Mill in Bangladesh

This customer from Bangladesh contacted us through our website, where the customer saw cases of our cooperation with other customers in the steel industry. They mainly produce rebars, angles and small sections for construction. As the plant's order book has risen in recent years, they wanted to replace the cranes they had initially purchased. Therefore would like to purchase a double girder overhead crane.

Lifting requirements

After several video conferences and emails with the customer's engineers, we clarified the following core requirements:

  1. Lifting capacity: Need to be able to safely lift 20 tons of billets, finished bundles and molds (actual adjustments based on common batch weights in steel mills, closer to reality than the original article).
  2. Span and Lifting Height: The span of the plant is about 22 meters, which requires the crane to fit the span; the lifting height needs to reach 9 meters in order to stack billets and finished products.
  3. Space constraints: The height of the plant is limited, and there are already rolling mills, cold beds and other stationary equipment inside, leaving the crane installation space is very compact. Cranes are required to be compact and have low headroom, maximizing the use of available space.
  4. Frequent operation: more than 16 hours of continuous operation per day, requiring durable equipment with low failure rate.
  5. Safety: The high temperature and dusty environment of steel requires multiple safety protection devices to ensure the safety of operators and equipment.

Challenges in the lifting environment

The lifting environment in steel mills puts equipment to the test, with specific challenges including:

  • ➢High temperature and dust: The temperature near the billet and rolled material can reach more than 60℃, and accompanied by iron oxide dust. Common electrical components and wire ropes are prone to deterioration.
  • ➢Heavy load and impact: Frequent starting and stopping and heavy lifting will have a big impact on the crane structure and operating mechanism, which requires the main girder and end girder to have very high rigidity and fatigue resistance.
  • ➢Small space: The plant was built many years ago and no space was reserved for the installation of a large traveling crane. It is necessary to complete the installation of the equipment with little or no change in the structure of the plant.
  • ➢Continuous operation: Cranes in the steel mill industry are often used at high frequencies and for long periods of time. High demands are placed on the heat dissipation of the motor, the reliability of the brake, and the life of wearing parts.

The solutions we offer

In response to the above challenges, we recommended and customized the LH type electric hoist double girder overhead travelling crane with the following core parameters:

  • ➢Structural features: Adopting lightweight box beam structure, it reduces its own height under the premise of guaranteeing the strength and realizes low headroom design, which strives for more effective lifting space for the limited-height plant.
  • ➢Dustproof and heat-resistant design: the motor and electrical parts are insulated with H-class insulation and increased protective cover; the wire rope is selected as high-temperature-resistant type, and the regular lubrication program is written in the maintenance manual.
  • ➢Safety Configuration: Equipped with anti-collision buffer device, lift limit switch, overload protection, emergency stop button and anti-swing control to ensure smooth and accurate positioning for heavy-duty operation.
  • ➢Control mode: adopts remote control operation + cab dual mode, which is convenient for ground personnel to operate flexibly.

Project implementation

Based on the plant drawings provided by the client, our team of engineers completed a detailed installation plan and low-level load calculations. Immediately after the completion of the lifting production, we commissioned a long-term cooperation logistics company to send it to the customer's location. When the goods were about to arrive, our dispatched engineers also set off to fly to Bangladesh to guide the customer's installation team to complete the crane installation on site. The whole installation process went very smoothly and both parties were very pleasant to work with. Immediately after the installation was completed, the customer conducted an installation test and the crane ran very smoothly.
