3 Ton Light-duty Bridge Crane for Shipyard in Maldives

This customer is from the Maldives and works in a shipyard. He had purchased lifting equipment from our company. This is his second time working with us. This time they needed a 3-ton overhead crane for moving ship components such as engine assemblies, rudders, propeller shafts, steel plate segments, etc. around the plant.

Key Challenges in the Lifting Environment

1. High Salt Spray, High Humidity Environments

The Maldives has a tropical oceanic climate with year-round humidity above 80% all year round and an extremely high concentration of salt in the air. Although the shipyard workshop is indoor, but the doors and windows are always open, the ventilation is large, the salt spray will be in direct contact with the metal structure of the crane, electrical components and wire rope.

Impact on equipment:

1. Steel surfaces are susceptible to rust, and weld areas may accelerate corrosion.
2. Oxidation of wiring contacts in the electrical control cabinet leads to increased failure rates.

Our Response Program

We provide customers with marine grade anti-corrosion coating for the whole machine, all the fasteners are made of 316 stainless steel, the electrical cabinet reaches IP55 protection level and is equipped with stainless steel hooks and galvanized steel wire ropes.

2. Compact Workshop Space with Limited Headroom

Indoor workshops in shipyards are usually converted from old ship sheds, with low roof structures, ventilation ducts, lighting and fire fighting lines. The low headroom available on site and the large size of some of the components to be lifted, together with the spreader and the safety clearance, make it impossible to raise the hook to a sufficient height and place certain demands on the compactness of the crane.

Our Response Program

To address the limited headroom in the shop and maximize the available lifting height. We offer a single girder overhead travelling crane of the HD model with a low headroom wire rope hoist. The effective lifting height required by the customer was finally achieved.

3. Frequent Starts and Stops and Precise Positioning Requirements

Marine component handling often requires alignment to be accomplished within a narrow station (e.g. dropping an engine into a seat hole). Ordinary cranes are prone to swinging due to inertia, causing workers to make repeated adjustments, which is inefficient and carries the risk of bumping.

Challenge

1. Under normal inverter control, the micro-motion response is not sensitive enough.
2. The inertial swing of a 3-ton load is difficult to contain when moving over short distances.

Our response program

Customers are equipped with two-speed lifting and frequency conversion running trolley, and electronic anti-swing function is added. Measured in full-speed operation, the spreader swing is reduced by more than 70%, and workers can operate the handle with one hand to align the parts successfully at one time.
